St. Anthony’s Major Seminary in Kachebere serves as the second stage of priestly training in Malawi, offering a Bachelor of Philosophy in affiliation with the Catholic University of Malawi. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of philosophy in developing critical thinking, understanding moral diversity, and analyzing arguments. Students engage with historical philosophical ideas, particularly those relevant to contemporary challenges, such as the resurgence of stoic philosophy. The program includes theoretical studies in epistemology and metaphysics, enhancing students’ conceptual thinking and their ability to synthesize faith and reason. This integration is crucial for addressing the relationship between religion and science. Additionally, the curriculum incorporates anthropology, psychology, and sociology, allowing students to evaluate the human experience from various perspectives. Throughout their three-year program, students are expected to develop specific skills relevant to each course, emphasizing the practical application of philosophical knowledge. Practical activities, such as weekend apostolates and parish community engagements, provide students with real-life experiences that inform their pastoral reflections and philosophical understanding. The seminary’s facilities support this educational approach, featuring spacious classrooms equipped with modern technology and a well-resourced library, including an e-library for current research. Monthly philosophical symposiums foster discussions on the relevance of philosophy to local and global challenges, enhancing students’ understanding of its practical applications. Moreover, students participate in manual work training, including livestock keeping and horticultural production, contributing to a holistic educational experience. This comprehensive approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to apply philosophical principles in their future endeavors.
